A new school for students with extra needs have raised funds for a local food bank.

Pupils from Lowen Special Educational Needs School in Gunnislake, which opened last year, has raised £85 from a bake sale for Callington Food Bank by selling Halloween themed cakes an biscuits.

The sale was held at the Koffi Lodge cafe where children from Rowan and Oak classes baked and decorated the treats as Rice Krispie spiders, shortbread ghosts and monster buns which customers paid for.

Students have now raised £240 for the food bank in less than a year. Tyler Collins, headteacher, said: ‘We are very proud of our students and their efforts raising money for such an important local charity of their choosing.

‘Firstly, a very successful curry day was held at the school, and then a Halloween bake sale.

‘It is great our students are positively contributing to our amazing local community.’

Students benefit from events such as this where they can interact and socialise in a safe environment where they have confidence to talk to people they do not know and learn some life lessons.

The school has now entered its second full academic year and is registered to provide education for up to 12 students aged seven to 18 with autism and/or complex learning needs.

It achieved a ‘good’ Ofsted rating accross the board in February.
