A FLIPPIN’ good day is planned at the United Reformed Church in Tavistock tomorrow when pancakes are served up on Shrove Tuesday.

Tavistock minister Rev Rob Weston said the Tavistock Fairtrade team will be marking Fairtrade Fortnight (February 21 to March 6) in a delicious way!

There will be no charge for the pancakes but donations are welcome and lots of Fairtrade products will be used.

‘Drop in to the Lower Deck hall of the United Reformed Church in Russell Street between noon and 2pm,’ said Rev Weston. ‘You’ll be able to eat as many pancakes as you can manage and choose from a selection of Fairtrade toppings such as honey, jam or chocolate spread. There will also be Fairtrade tea, coffee and juice available.’

Donations will help the Fairtrade Foundation (www.fairtrade.org.uk) which works with farmers in low-income countries to benefit from fairer prices, trading practices and resources to tackle the climate emergency.

Tavistock has been a Fairtrade Town since 2005, with many local shops and eateries selling products with the Fairtrade Mark. There are now over 6,000 of these: from coffee to clothes, bananas to beauty balm. By choosing these, people can stand with farmers in places such as Honduras and Uganda who are affected daily by climate change. More information will be available at the pancake lunch event and in a display at Tavistock Library.

Rob said ‘Do join us on Shrove Tuesday, together we can enjoy some delicious pancakes and support communities far and wide for a better, fairer world. We couldn’t organise face to face events last year due to covid restrictions, but now we’re back and ready to flip those pancakes.’
