Callington’s famous Poppy Wave — made of poppies knitted and crocheted by the community — is back at St Mary’s Church, ready to mark Armistice Day, thanks to local volunteers including the fire crew.
Last weekend volunteers put up new poppy and leaf panels made by the Poppy Volunteer Group around the war memorial and a new banner was draped over the railings beside the new toilet block on New Road. They also decorated planters in Fore Street and put up wooden crosses with poppies on them in the flower beds in the square.
On Sunday evening, the floodlights on the fire engine were used to light the work of the fire crew as they climbed their ladders against the church carrying the wreath and poppy wave with them. Members of the community helped the crew to stretch out and secure the wave in place and more poppy crosses were placed under the wave.
The poppy wave will be illuminated every evening up to Remembrance Sunday in what is Callington’s unique tribute to servicemen and women. Many veterans live in the town.
